Doggett's Coat & Badge
Big Big Love in the City

The venue that we have chosen for our Big Big Love in The City events, like The Royal Hotel,
is full of history and the story behind the Doggett’s Coat and Badge is a fascinating one!

The name pays tribute to Thomas Doggett, the organiser of the London Bridge to Chelsea
rowing race (Oxford-Cambridge) along the Thames.
The pub sits along the course of the race on South Bank, and is so named it after its founder.
It is said to be the oldest continuous sporting event in the UK.
First held in 1715, it takes place in July each year and runs over four miles and seven furlongs.
The winner of the boat race would be awarded a waterman’s coat and badge, hence the name ‘Doggett’s Coat and Badge’.
When Doggett died in 1721, he left instructions in his will for the race to be carried on by
The Fishmongers’ Company, and it still is today.
Our next (and final) 'Big Big Love in the City' Event for 2024 will be held on:
Sun 6th October - 2PM to 9PM
It event will be held on the lovely Terrace Bar (on the 3rd floor).
The terrace bar overlooks the wonderful skyline in England's wonderful Capital City where
you can enjoy the views across the Thames to St Paul’s, the Old Bailey, Somerset House
and much of Central London, so come and join us at such a beautiful venue.
